摘要
Injury triggers a number of beneficial cellular and biochemical events, such as the inflammatory response, which usually functions to the benefit of the injured patient. Occasionally, this response goes awry, and organ injury or death may result. Recent advances in molecular biology and biotechnology have led to an increased understanding of the role of cytokines in the host response to injury. Modulation of cytokine production is being evaluated in clinical trials to stimulate ''appropriate'' and inhibit ''inappropriate'' host responses.
