Abstract
Objectives: The present research examines motives for stimulant use. In this study we compared a group of amphetamine users to a second group that predominantly used methamphetamine. Methods: Based on a literature review and expert interviews a questionnaire was developed that was administered to 145 patients of counseling and treatment facilities, as well as to 247 participants that were recruited over the internet. The sample consisted of 205 amphetamine users and 187 individuals that (additionally) used methamphetamine within the last year. Results: Recreational and pleasure related motives were relevant for both amphetamine and methamphetamine users. The latter frequently reported additional motives such as structuring the day (39.0%), suppressing nightmares (14.4%), self-medication (36.9%) and enabling sexual activities (18.7%).Conclusions: A particularly broad spectrum of motives was detected in methamphetamine users. These partially concerned everyday functioning or were associated with psychological stress or mental disorders. A thorough analysis of the diverse and complex motives could contribute to a better adjustment of therapeutic interventions for the patients' individual needs.
