CA1 pyramidal cells (CA1PCs) in the hippocampus develop ‘place fields’ (PFs), to form a spatial map that may be disrupted in cognitive disorders. Recent work has found that PF formation occurs through a novel mechanism, behavioral time scale synaptic plasticity (BTSP). However, the circuit mechanisms of BTSP and their importance for population coding and memory behavior remain undetermined. Here we begin to uncover the circuit mechanisms regulating BTSP and the relationship of PF formation in neural ensembles to learning behavior.
