Temperature Dependent Photoluminescence Studies of NUV Excited Gd2O3: Eu Phosphor

Europium doped gadolinium oxide phosphor was successfully synthesized by the solution combustion method. The influence of temperature on the structural and optical properties of Gd2(1-x)Eu2xO3 (x = 0,0.01) phosphor is studied. The phase and the crystal structure of the phosphor are estimated by the XRD analysis. An enhancement in the calcination temperature results in the better crystallinity of the phosphor in the pure phase. The formation of the phosphor is further confirmed by the FTIR spectra. The optical band gap energy is estimated using Wood and Tauc relation. The effect of calcination temperature on the photoluminescence emission spectra is studied. Two most intense emissions are observed at -614 and 623 nm corresponding to the D-5(0) -> F-7(2) forbidden electric dipole transition of europium ion. Based on the 1931 CIE chromaticity diagram, the chromaticity coordinates are calculated and the formation of a red phosphor is confirmed. The synthesized phosphor can be used as a potential candidate in lighting applications. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
