OpenMRS as a global good: Impact, opportunities, challenges, and lessons learned from fifteen years of implementation

•OpenMRS is an opensource scalable medical record system which has resulted in its recognition as a Global Good.•Almost 4–8 million USD have been spent in its development.•The study highlights the commonly reported benefits of using OpenMRS and critical challenges faced by the OpenMRS community.•Its use is reported to improve quality & efficiency of healthcare delivery, data availability, reporting & interoperability.•This indicates a favourable returns on investment, however more investment is needed for sustained development.
