•Using Twitter data to analyze the statistical relationship between human movements and the difference in PM2.5 concentrations between the destination and the origin country at a global scale.•In most countries, the Net Move-out Rate (NMR) is positively correlated with PM2.5 concentration of the origin country.•The number of international movements is negatively correlated with difference in PM2.5 concentration of the destination and the origin country.•Twitter users in Indian cities tend to move to other Indian cities of better air qualities.
