•This meta-analysis estimated the association between DICER1 variants and cancer risk.•Meta-analysis was possible for rs1057035, rs13078, rs1209904 and rs3742330.•rs1057035 was associated with the overall cancer risk under multiple genetic models.•rs13078, rs1209904 and rs3742330 did not show association with cancer risk.
