Impacts of coal mining and coal seam gas extraction on groundwater and surface water

•Coal mining and coal seam gas developments can have important hydrological impacts.•There is large uncertainty associated with the magnitude of these impacts.•There is potential for cumulative impacts from multiple developments in proximity.•A cumulative impact assessment approach is hereby presented and applied.
