Dynamic Response of Co-continuous Ceramic/Metal Composite Under Impact Loading

Dynamic response of SiC/Al composite with 15% porosity under 700 to 2600 s(-1) strain rate was investigated by modified SHPB system. High speed photography was used to capture the procedure and set up the relationship between deformation and real stress. The relation of damage characterization of samples and real stress-strain curve under dynamic loading was studied by deformation control technology. It is shown that the dynamic compression strength of this composite is sensitive to strain rate and propagation direction of main cracks lie 45 to axial direction. When stress increased to half of the peak stress, there is a special stage characterized by rapid cracks expansion and low stress increasing. But such stage was restrained by inter aluminum and stress increased again. When stress increased to peak stress, the center of the sample was broken and double cone formed.
