•The selection of females with calm or less reactive temperaments becomes important in the selection of replacement heifers.•The temperament of bovine females Bos taurus indicus affects their reproductive performance.•Reactive and Very Reactive females presented higher plasmatic cortisol concentration.•Calm females showed a larger diameter of the dominant follicle on the day of TAI.•More Reactive females had lower pregnancy per IA at Days 30 and 60.
