•We present the outline and required functionality of a global model for wetland ecosystem services.•Key elements are area, water budget, inundated fraction, nutrient fluxes and vegetation.•Available knowledge and input data make it feasible to build such a model.•No integrated global model exists, but several existing models provide important ‘building blocks’.
