Despite acceptable cure rates offered by standard surgical and radiation (brachytherapy or external beam radiation) therapies for localised prostate cancer (CaP), further studies aimed to increased local tumour control and decreased complication effects are desirable. In this setting, the use of pro-drug activating enzymes (Cytosine Deaminase/5-FC) or 5-FU metabolising enzymes (gene therapy enzyme/prodrug approaches), may be a new option in the treatment and control of localised prostate cancer.
