Effects of experimental prescribed fire and tree thinning on oak savanna understory plant communities and ecosystem structure

•Mechanical thinning and prescribed fire restored oak savanna better than fire alone.•Understory species have apparent syngergistic response to fire and increased light.•The effects of thinning and fire may be transient in early restoration.
