Superior performance biodiesel from biomass-derived fusel alcohols and low grade oils: Fatty acid fusel esters (FAFE)

•Partial optimization of lipase-catalyzed fatty acid fusel alcohol esters (FAFE) for compression ignition fuel application.•FAFE production using fusel alcohol mixtures indicated isobutanol is the favored alcohol substrate over isopentanol isomers.•Improved ignition delay, cold flow, and heat of combustion for FAFE mixtures compared to FAMEs.
