Biodegradable packaging of cellulose acetate incorporated with norbixin, lycopene or zeaxanthin

•Norbixin, lycopene and zeaxanthin were incorporated into cellulose acetate films.•Carotenoids improved ultraviolet light barrier property and plasticizing effect in the polymeric matrix.•The biodegradable films with norbixin or lycopene showed better protective effect on sunflower oil stability.•Potential application of natural antioxidants in active packaging films.
