•The internal damage energy increased with the increasing impact velocity.•The bruise susceptibility increased with the increasing impact velocity.•The bruise susceptibility amounted to around 3 cm3 J−1 at velocities 1-1.5 m s−1.•The peak deformation was on the average 39–42 % of the bruise depth.•The contact width was on the average 135–146 % of the bruise width.
