The Effects of Duty Cycle Limit to Small Single Gateway LoRaWAN Protocol Network

Low power wide area network (LP-WAN) has been widely deployed due to the long communication range and long-lasting battery life. LoRaWAN becomes a major candidate for implementing the LP-WAN due to the easy to deploy with low device cost and power consumption. According to the star-like topology of LoRaWAN, no other network infrastructure is required. However, it can only transmit with quite low data transmission rate but still suitable for sending the low amount of IoT sensing data. In this paper, the effects of duty cycle limit for a single gateway LoRaWAN has been investigated for low density network. The experiment bases on the ns-3 simulator with the LoRaWAN extension. The results shown that increasing the duty cycle causes the decreasing of the success transmission rate. However, for low density network, the effects are less compared to the network that contains larger number of nodes.
