Sampling effort and information quality provided by rare and common species in estimating assemblage structure

•Extensive biological assessments are urgent but are hampered by high costs.•Proper protocols should reduce local sample effort and increase spatial coverage.•Sample effort can be estimated by removing individuals or species from large samples.•Good estimates of similarity was attained with strong reduction of sampling effort.•Common species provided better information than rare species.
