Modeling of Electromagnetic Torque in Synchronous Reluctance Machines using Inductance Harmonics

An analytical model to predict the torque and torque ripple in synchronous reluctance machine (SyncRel) is proposed and developed. The model predicts torque performance of the reluctance type machine based on inductance harmonics profile. High performance torque ripple sensitive application has very stringent torque ripple and noise and vibration requirements to satisfy the overall system performances. The prediction of the torque ripple is very important for such applications to identify the root cause and then mitigate the torque ripple through design alternations under different loading (current) conditions of the machine. The developed analytical model provides a simpler, intuitive and much less time consuming yet reasonably accurate alternative compared to the finite element analysis. A 2D finite element model has been developed to validate the proposed analytical model.
