•Experimental and numerical study on residual performance of masonry after exposure to elevated temperature was performed.•Compression behavior of brick units, mortar and masonry prisms was investigated.•Two types of masonry bricks were considered: clay bricks and calcium silicate bricks.•Residual compressive strength of the bricks (after cooling) is not the same as in hot state.•The residual stiffness of the masonry prisms is more controlled by the mortar than by the brick stiffness.
