Catalytic synthesis of segmented carbon filaments via decomposition of chlorinated hydrocarbons on Ni-Pt alloys

•A series of micro-disperse Ni1-xPtx alloys were synthesized by coprecipitation.•Catalytic processing of C2H4Cl2 into filamentous carbon on Ni-Pt alloys was studied.•Formation of intermediate Ni1-xPtxCδ phase was proven by XRD.•Kinetics of carbon deposition has non-linear dependence on Pt content.•The structure of produced carbon filaments was found to be segmented.
