Efficient identification of preferential flow path in heterogeneous media based on stream function

•A new method (SF) was introduced to efficiently identify preferential flow paths.•SF method generally finds reasonable paths as particle tracking but is more efficient.•SF method considers flow conditions and avoids violation of hydrodynamic constraints.
