2017 this disparity no longer existed.Authors published in the following themes; malignant hepatic disease (F = 20.7%,M = 25.8%),benign hepatic disease (F = 11.5%,M = 9.8%), malignant pancreatic disease (F = 33.8%,M = 26.5%),benign pancreatic disease (F = 10.3%, M = 16.4%),malignant biliary disease ( F=10.7%, M=8.3%), benign biliary disease (F = 4.6%, M = 5.0%), Education/training ( F = 1.1%, M = 1.4%) and transplantation ( F = 7.6%, M = 6.3%).Overall, there was no difference in distribution by gender.Female first authors progressed to senior author publications at a rate of 9.3% vs. 15.1% of male authors.Additionally, male senior authors were three times more likely to publish multiple articles compared to their female counterparts.Conclusion: This is the largest published study to investigate gender gaps in surgical research authorships for a specific specialty.In the last decade some progress has been made; however, these findings elucidate the continued underrepresentation of women in senior research roles and the need to recruit and mentor women in all stages of their academic careers.
