Challenges encountered and lessons learned during a trial of an electronic hand hygiene monitoring system.

•Hand hygiene increased significantly during the entire pre- and postintervention period.•Compliance improved before implementation of the automated monitoring system.•Health care personnel sanitized their hands more often after touching a patient.•Use of the automated system did not significantly improve hand hygiene compliance.•Poor accuracy of the automated system affected acceptance by health care personnel.
