Estimation of CO2 sequestration potential by afforestation in the arid rangelands of Western Australia based on long-term empirical data

•Growth of Eucalyptus camaldulensis in an arid environment was observed for 15 years.•Hardpan blasting with water-harvesting enabled the growth and survival of trees.•Predicted growth rate of E. camaldulensis was dependent on supplied water.•Afforestation by active site engineering demonstrates a viable mitigation technique in arid areas.
