•The zinc modified BEA zeolite catalysts demonstrated to be a potential additive to FCC.•The catalysts presented good activity in the cracking of paraffinic and sulfurized compounds.•The addition of zinc decreases the number of Bronsted sites with increasing zinc content.•Hydrogen transfer promoted thiophene reduction on zinc modified BEA zeolite catalysts.
