Medicinal plants with concomitant anti-diabetic and anti-hypertensive effects as potential sources of dual acting therapies against diabetes and hypertension: A review

•A review on medicinal plants with anti-diabetic and anti-hypertensive activities demonstrated in same study was conducted.•102 medicinal plant species, mostly in the Fabaceae family, were identified from 63 studies to possess the dual activities.•The potency ratio of the plants against the two diseases greatly varied and only a few plants showed similar potency ratio.•Polyphenols, glycosides and nicotinamide were identified as potential dual acting phytochemicals.•The medicinal plants could serve as a potential source to develop dual acting therapies against diabetes and hypertension.
