Climate at ecologically relevant scales: A new temperature and soil moisture logger for long-term microclimate measurement

•A new microclimate data logger (TMS) resembling a small plant is presented.•It accurately measures soil moisture and soil, surface and air temperature.•Large memory and long battery life allow >10 years of independent operation.•The TMS logger provides microclimate measurements at a biologically relevant scale.
