•Gas flow rates cause zoning within the vessel.•When loaded the mixing time can increase with increasing agitation rate.•For aerated conditions 6MFU configuration give the shorter mixing time.•The mass transfer in each zone is different.•Dividing the vessel into zones allows the mass transfer to be predicted.
