•A new estimator of ore quality, XLTU, may detect ore quality problems.•Iron recovery in WLIMS can be predicted by iron recovery in Davis tube.•Fe-oxides liberation in feed can be predicted from test Davis tube test.•Davis tube should be applied only for studying the marginal ores.
