The thermodynamic characteristics of a Stirling/pulse tube hybrid cryocooler

•An idealized model of the Stirling/pulse tube cryocooler is established.•The second stage decreases the gross cooling capacity of the first stage.•The first stage may produce heat though the phase of the piston lags the displacer.•The mechanism of inter-stage cooling capacity shifting is revealed.
