Letter to the Editor: Response to Vermiglio, 2018, “The Gold Standard and Auditory Processing Disorder”
Perspectives of the ASHA Special Interest Groups(2018)
摘要
Purpose and Conclusion This letter to the editor is a rebuttal to Vermigliou0027s “The Gold Standard and Auditory Processing Disorder” (2018). We identify several faulty premises, inconsistent use of terminology, and several key errors and omissions that undermine Vermigliou0027s assertions. We conclude that the definition of auditory processing disorder (APD) is not ambiguous; a clinically useful and widely adopted gold standard for the diagnosis of APD is in use across the world; and this efficient test battery leads to verifiable diagnosis of APD and deficit-specific, individualized intervention that leads to the provision of enhanced opportunities in academic, work, and social environments for children and adults diagnosed with APD. We note that Vermigliou0027s flawed assertions may serve to discourage clinical services for patients with APD and propose that those who take issue with the research base of APD contribute original research that advances diagnostic and treatment services for this population.
