Abstract
Background and objective: The needs oriented application of psychological therapy is considered as most useful for the therapy of chronic back pain. Aim of the study is to clarify whether an assessment based diagnostic with an optional therapy management is useful to increase the effectiveness of the rehabilitation of chronic back pain. Methods: In a control group design patients of the treatment group received assessment based therapy recommendations which could be implemented optional. The control group received a care as usual rehabilitation. As a result of the non-randomised treatment assignment a propensity score matching was applied to the data. The outcome quality was assed using the following scales: FESV, PDI, NRS. Patients were questioned at the beginning and the end of their rehabilitation and 3 months after being discharged from hospital. Result: Overall, 47 pairs of patients were identified by propensity score matching. The results show that the amount of applied therapy minutes were different between groups, as it was intended by the study design. In all scales efficiency differences occurred in favour of the intervention group. The effect size of the differences in outcome quality could be described as small to moderate. Conclusion: The needs oriented application of therapy minutes open up efficiency potentials without increasing the overall amount of therapy.
