Abstract
The world is moving towards finding an alternative source for power generation. Biodiesel is a better replacement fuel where we have to design an engine for utilizing its full capacity. This is an exploration work for the operation of Grape Seed Oil Methyl Ester (GOME) -diesel mixes in a Direct Injection diesel engine by changing its combustion bowl geometry. The engine was tested with the piston having Deep Bowl Combustion chamber (DBCC) and Toroidal Combustion chamber (TCC) geometries and compared the results with Standard Piston Combustion Chamber (SPCC) geometry. The piston bowl were designed and manufactured without modifying the compression ratio of the engine. The examinations were completed with B25 (25% GOME + 75% diesel), B50 (50% GOME + 50% diesel), B75 (75% GOME +25% diesel) and B100 (100% GOME) fuel for 3 different bowl geometries. The Thermo gravimetric Analysis (TGA) has given the importance of higher in-cylinder temperature for the mass change of GOME leads to more premixed phase of combustion. The results demonstrate that DBCC has better execution and discharge when compared with SPCC and TCC for all test mixes. B25 and B50 fuels were observed to be the ideal mixes with DBCC and TCC individually. While SPCC rarely showed better engine characteristics for any of the blends categorically, Brake Thermal Efficiency for B25 blend demonstrated a 26.95% higher than SPCC-diesel with DBCC piston and the smoke, CO (Carbon Monoxide) and HC (Hydro Carbon) are lowered by 25.72%, 51.72% and 17.85% respectively. Thus the B25 blend in a DBCC piston engine was observed to be the distinction than other configurations. The outcomes confirmed that DBCC is an acceptable conclusion for 25% mix of GOME with diesel
