Improving antioxidant activity of lignin by hydrogenolysis

•The hydrogenolysis significantly improved the antioxidant activity of lignin.•An increase of phenolic hydroxyl content by hydrogenolysis of lignin.•The hydrogenolysis resulted in the decrease of molecular weight and methoxyl content.•A suitable para-alkyl chain length was beneficial to improve the antioxidant activity.
