PHOTOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTATION OF CAECAL INTUBATION: HAS THE INTRODUCTION OF THE NATIONAL COLON CANCER SCREENING PROGRAMME INFLUENCED REPORTING PRACTICES IN COLONOSCOPY PERFORMED IN THE SYMPTOMATIC SERVICE?

The introduction of Ireland's national colon cancer screening programme (Bowelscreen) has brought further focus on quality assurance in colonoscopy. Caecal Intubation Rate (CIR) is a marker of quality in colonoscopy and photographic documentation of caecal landmarks is the accepted method of its record. Indeed the Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Colorectal Screening state that photographic evidence of caecal intubation is required to document complete intubation and must be available to support complete colonoscopy.
