Aqueous epoxy-based superhydrophobic coatings: Fabrication and stability in water

Superhydrophobic (SH) property of SH coating fabricated by waterborne resins is not stable when the coating is immersed in water for a certain period time, e.g. a Cassie-Wenzel transition occurs. It is overturning of hydrophilic groups from the inside of surface toward water that causes such transition. When the coating is completely dried again, the hydrophilic groups turn back to inside of surface and the coating recovers SH property reversibly. By decreasing the amount of hydrophilic groups in SH coating formula, more stable SH properties in water can be obtained.
