•Aluminum oxide microtubes decorated with metallic nanoparticles.•Hierarchical nanoarchitectures formed on the hollow microstructured materials.•A thin oxide layer was formed first on the molten liquid surface.•The formation and growth of a spherical droplet suck the molten aluminum inner core.•Surface tension driven flow plays an important role towards the microtube formation.
