•Mesoporous SiO2 xerogels were incorporated into CS membranes to form MMMs.•SiO2 xerogel/CS MMMs reveal the separation ability for butanol dehydration.•0.25wt% SiO2 xerogel/CS MMMs possessed the best performance for butanol dehydration.•The SiO2 xerogel/CS MMMs show promise for future industrial pervaporation applications.
