•Earthworms are very useful to assess the soil quality especially on vineyards.•Deep-burrowing and anecic earthworms species has a key role in soil ecology.•Octodrilus has species endemism in the wine producing area in Northeastern Italy.•The study run on 29 vineyards and 32 woodlands in Italy, Croatia and Slovenia.•Reducing soil management activities make rural environment attractive to deep-burrowing species.
