Seed yield, galactomannan content and quality traits of different guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L.) genotypes

•Guar grain yield ranged from 1.49tha−1 of Matador to 2.05tha−1 of Lewis varieties.•Galactomannan content was on average 31g/100g and galactomannan yield was 0.55tha−1.•India and South Africa varieties showed the best chemical composition as feed ingredient.•Fatty acid composition showed interesting values, similar to common edible oil crops.•Guar emerged as a crop with a double aptitude for industrial and feed use.
