Pilot study on use of home telephoning to identify and recruit high-risk individuals for lung cancer screening

•It is essential to efficiently identify high-risk persons for lung cancer screening.•Our study suggests that direct home telephoning is effective but too costly.•Alternative methods involving family physicians should be investigated.•Screening uptake may be increased by information campaigns about screening benefits.
