Studies on genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance in plant and ratoon crops of sugarcane

18 genotypes of sugarcane including 4 checks were evaluated in plant and ratoon crops to work out variability, heritability and genetic advance for cane and quality characteristics. Highest gcv and pcvwere recorded for single cane weight plant crop where as in ratoon crop highest gcv and pcv was recorded for number of millable cane. Highest genetic advance was recorded for cane yield in plant crop and for number of millable cane in ratoon crop. All characters showed high heritability. It is suggested that selection should be based on yield contributing characters having high gcv and pcv, heritability and genetic advance along with mean value and low depression in ratoon crop for development of genotypes with good ratooning ability.
