•30% of companies do not know whether transients and surges are an issue.•20% of companies surveyed do not know whether harmonics are in their system.•Power quality (PQ) monitoring and alarming utilized only by 30% of the participants.•Focus of PQ monitoring is at distribution level not at equipment level.•Increasing energy efficiency (e.g. smart lighting, variable speed drives), increases harmonics.
