When are night shifts effective for nursing student clinical learning? Findings from a mixed-method study design.

•Night shifts are ambiguous in students’ perceptions: they report satisfaction with night shifts but these shifts are not preferred because of the risk of wasting time, boredom, and of being involved in non-nursing tasks.•Night shifts offered to students should involve experiences with a high impact on their clinical learning avoiding inactive roles or non-nursing tasks.
