Photodegradation of metoprolol using a porphyrin as photosensitizer under homogeneous and heterogeneous conditions.

•Metoprolol photodegradation in water with H2TF5PP as the photosensitizer.•H2TF5PP photosensitizer is efficient under homogeneous and heterogeneous conditions.•Singlet oxygen is the main ROS involved in the photodegradation process.•Metoprolol degradation under real sunlight is in accordance with the simulated data.•The main resulting products were identified by HPLC-UV-ESI–MSn.
