•Liquid-liquid extraction of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions.•Cu2+ ions were extracted using [bmim][TF2N] as diluent and a β-diketone (TFA) as extractant.•Significant improvement in the extraction performance.•The stripping of metal complex from the organic phase was achieved with a scCO2.•Stripping was efficiently implemented in semi-continuous mode.
