•The copper or silver salt-mediated C–H/C–H cross-coupling reactions are reviewed.•The stoichiometric copper or silver salts serve as both the promoter and oxidant.•Both the advantages and limitations of this type of reactions have been highlighted.•There remain ample opportunities in the future development of this research area.
