Deep sequencing of small RNA libraries from human prostate epithelial and stromal cells reveal distinct pattern of microRNAs primarily predicted to target growth factors

•MiRNAs of primary prostate epithelial and stromal cells have been established by deep sequencing of the small RNA libraries.•Highly expressed miRNAs of both PrEC and PrSC cells are likely to target several growth factors and proliferation promoting pathways implicated in Prostate cancer.•Novel miRNAs of both, prostate epithelial and stromal cells have been identified.•Novel miRNAs are predicted to target a variety of transcription factors.
