Coexistence of two different genotypes of Sarcoptes scabiei derived from companion dogs and wild raccoon dogs in Gifu, Japan: The genetic evidence for transmission between domestic and wild canids

•No host specificity of S. scabiei genotypes for wild or domestic canids was found.•Two genotypes of S. scabiei coexist in sympatric wild and domestic canids.•Allele number and diversity suggest multiple introductions of S. scabiei.
